Freedom Suit Plaintiffs: Profiles in Courage

Hundreds of people who were being held as slaves in St. Louis sued for their freedom in the city’s Circuit Court during the five decades leading to the Civil War. The Freedom Suits Memorial identifies and honors these Black men, women, and children, who confronted enormous obstacles in their efforts to establish their freedom.

We invite you to learn more about their stories, through the documents their legal struggles produced. Clicking on the names of the plaintiffs listed below will take you to their case files, the vast majority of which were digitized by the St. Louis Freedom Suits / Legal Encoding Project at Washington University. Among plaintiffs who sued more than once, please note that only their first suit is linked.

[This segment of the Virtual Learning Center is still under construction and will continue to be added to over time. Still there is a great deal of information about the plaintiffs below.]
