Most discussions and articles about freedom suits focus on the plaintiffs and the legal system. What is not as often mentioned – and perhaps because there is simply the absence of anything to memorialize it – is the involvement of the people outside the legal profession. One example of this aspect of the freedom suits being explored is in Anne Twitty’s brilliant piece: “Litigating Freedom During the Missouri Crisis” published in 2021 (see full citation in the segment “Recommended Reading” herein. There, professor Twitty sheds light on the St. Ferdinand Township community and its impact on early St. Louis freedom suits plaintiffs Arch (1818), Jack (1818), and Winny (1821 and 1825) and their decisions to bring their cases.
