Celebrate Juneteenth 2024 with “The Milly Project”

On June 18, the Freedom Suits Memorial Foundation and the Law Library Association of St. Louis will jointly host an inspiring Juneteenth event – a screening of the official video of the award-winning play, “The Milly Project” followed by a discussion of distinguished panelists.

“The Milly Project” is a heroic-turned-tragic, true story about Milly Sawyers, an enslaved Black woman who filed two freedom suits in St. Louis before she was removed to Springfield, Missouri, where she filed, and finally won, a third freedom suit. After winning her freedom, however, Milly was attacked by a mob that included many of Springfield’s founders. Playwright Kendra Chappell uses Milly’s story to bookend her communication of a singular, but powerful, arc of the experiences of Black Americans from before the Civil War and up to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Panelists include:

Lynne M. Jackson, great-great granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott; Founder and President of the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation

Gwendolyn Moore, Curator of Landscape and Community Identity, Missouri History Museum

Judge David C. Mason, 22nd Judicial Circuit; Founder, Freedom Suits Memorial

Rob Good, Scholar in Residence, University of Missouri-St. Louis
